Bhagirathi Paati was surprised to see different people visiting her that day to ask about various good things. When she inquired who they were, they mentioned that they had come from faraway places, all worked for the same company, and had heard about Bhagirathi Paati from their friend’s mother. They added that, after hearing about her, they came to seek answers to their doubts. Paati then asked them to share their questions.
Brahma Mukurtham
The visitors told Paati that since it was the month of Margazhi, they would wake up early, clean their doorsteps, draw kolams, add colors to make them beautiful, and compete among themselves to see who created the best kolam. However, after that month, they would fall back into laziness and stop this practice during other months. They explained that it was because they had to go to work and couldn’t manage it. Hearing this, Paati began narrating the significance of Brahma Muhurtham and the benefits of waking up during that time, engaging in productive activities, and lighting lamps at the doorstep through a story.
The Example Story Narrated by Paati
In a family, a husband, wife, two daughters, and the grandparents were living happily together. At one point, the couple arranged a marriage for their elder daughter with someone suitable for their status. Later, when it was time to look for a match for their second daughter, they struggled to find a suitable alliance. After several attempts, a proposal came through a relative. However, the prospective groom was from a very poor family. The boy was described as a good person, but his family had four daughters, with only the eldest married. The other three daughters were yet to be married. Hearing this, the parents outrightly refused, saying they would not give their daughter into such a family.
However, the grandparents offered to visit the boy’s house to assess the situation, and the parents agreed. Upon visiting, the grandparents carefully observed and evaluated everyone in the family, analyzing their qualities and behaviors. They realized that the boy’s father was the one managing all the household tasks. Seeing this, the grandfather confidently said, “My granddaughter will easily handle this situation.” He added, “There’s no need to worry about the father-in-law; my granddaughter is capable of managing a person like him”. The grandparents returned and informed the parents that the match should be finalized. Out of respect for the elders’ advice, the parents agreed to the marriage arrangement.
The Wedding Arrangement.
The parents, who had agreed to the marriage, had the mother share a few secrets with the daughter. She revealed that when she first came into this house after her marriage, the household was in a state of poverty. She explained that her own mother had taught her certain principles, and by following them, she was able to transform the house into one of prosperity and wealth. “Now, I am sharing those secrets with you,” the mother told her daughter.
The mother explained, “The greatest secret lies in the work you will do each month when I step away from the household chores. The practices you’ve been accustomed to here are what bring prosperity and Lakshmi’s blessings to this home. If you continue the same practices in your new home, you can ensure the blessings of wealth and fortune there as well.” The daughter agreed to follow her mother’s advice and was married into the new household.
As part of the wedding dowry, the girl was gifted various utensils and household items. Among them were two bronze oil lamps. She applied sandalwood paste and kumkum to the lamps, filled them with oil, and placed wicks in them. Following this, she faithfully carried out the practices her mother had advised her to perform.
Lighting the lamp
Since she lived in an apartment without a back door, she opened the balcony door in one of the rooms and sprinkled turmeric-mixed water there. Then, she sprinkled the same turmeric-mixed water at the house’s entrance, wiped it clean, and drew a kolam. She cleaned the doorstep thoroughly and drew another kolam there. After that, she lit the two lamps she had received as part of her dowry and placed them at the entrance. With her mind focused on the goddess, she prayed, saying, “You must come and reside in my home. This house is in a state of poverty, and this situation must change. My entry into this home should bring good fortune, and this house should flourish with prosperity.” She imagined the goddess walking behind her and followed the divine presence half-step by half-step with reverence. The girl realized the immense power of heartfelt prayers made with a pure mind and paused for a moment to meditate on the goddess, deeply immersed in her devotion.
After that, she noticed her father-in-law standing there, and he began shouting angrily about her lighting the lamps. As a result, she decided to light only one lamp the next day. However, even then, his anger intensified. Hearing the commotion, her husband came out to see what was happening. After understanding the situation, he questioned his father about his behavior. His father responded, saying, “In this house, I still have the responsibility of getting three more daughters married. Your wife does not seem to be frugal, and that’s why I have been managing all these household tasks myself all this time. Even after your wife arrived, I continued doing the same.” Hearing this, she apologized to him.
She promised her father-in-law that she would no longer light lamps at the entrance. The next morning, as usual, she woke up early and carried out the tasks her mother had advised her to do. Then, she took an old oil lamp, cleaned it thoroughly, applied turmeric and kumkum to it, and lit the lamp. She placed the lamp inside a pot, carried it gently toward the entrance, and meditated on the goddess. She prayed, “I cannot light a lamp freely at the entrance of this house. Please accept this lamp and come reside in our home as a divine presence. Let this house prosper with your blessings. Since I cannot leave the lamp outside for long, please forgive me and join me inside the house. Bless this home by staying here and bringing peace and prosperity.” With these words, she slowly walked toward the prayer room, carrying the divine presence in her heart.
Grace of the Goddess
The goddess, unwilling to let the girl’s heartfelt thoughts go in vain, followed her and settled in the prayer room. Carrying the pot in her hands, the girl entered the prayer room, carefully removed the lamp from the pot, meditated for a moment, and placed some sacred rice (akshata) on the lamp before lighting it. She then hid the lit lamp under the kolam-drawing plank in the prayer room. The act of lighting the lamp became a secret known only to her and the divine beings she worshipped. Over time, as the goddess took residence in the house, all worries and troubles in the household gradually disappeared.
Her husband and father-in-law began to work with enthusiasm and dedication. As a result of their hard work, the poverty that had once gripped the household gradually started to fade away, and opportunities for prosperity began to emerge.
Marriage of the three daughters
One after another, the three daughters were married into good families. Following this, the landlord of the house they were residing in mentioned that he planned to sell the property and that prospective buyers might visit at any time. Hearing this, her husband expressed his desire to purchase the house himself. Overjoyed by the proposal, the landlord happily sold the house to them.
As time passed, she became pregnant. When she was five months along, her parents came to take her to their home, as was customary. However, she refused, saying, “I cannot come to the village. If I leave, the practice of lighting the lamp will be interrupted.” Her mother gently reassured her, saying, “Nothing will happen in just one day.” Since no one in the household knew about her lamp-lighting practice, her mother suggested she could visit for just a day and return. Reluctantly, she agreed and prepared to leave.
The next morning, as usual, she woke up early and took it upon herself to perform the early morning chores at her mother’s house. She cleaned both the back and front entrances with fresh cow dung, sprinkled water, and swept the area before drawing kolams. While doing so, she imagined in her mind that she was performing these same actions at her own house. With heartfelt devotion, she cleaned the doorstep, drew a kolam, and freely brought out two lamps, placing them on either side of the entrance. In her heart, she thought, “When will I ever be able to place lamps freely like this in my own home? It will happen only when the goddess wills it.” With this thought, she continued her ritual, mentally inviting the goddess to enter her home as always. Unbeknownst to her, every action she performed at her mother’s house was being mirrored in her marital home, where the goddess herself was ensuring everything was done just as it should be.
Returning from Her Mother’s House to Her Own Home
When the woman returned to her own home, the sight that greeted her deeply moved her. She noticed that the exact same kolam she had drawn at her mother’s house was also present at the entrance of her own home. This amazed her. Since it was already late, her parents decided to stay the night at her home. The next morning, as usual, she woke up early and began to carry out her daily tasks.
At that moment, the goddess, intending to reveal her grace to the family, caused the father-in-law to wake up due to a natural disturbance. Unaware that her father-in-law had entered the kitchen, the woman, as usual, placed the lit lamp inside the pot, invited the goddess into her home, took the lamp out, meditated for a moment, and offered it before returning. When she stepped out, she was shocked to see her father-in-law standing there. He immediately shouted, “All this time, the house prospered without lighting lamps, and now you’ve started this again! This house is going to return to its state of poverty.” Hearing the commotion, her husband came out and, influenced by the divine play of the goddess, began acting angrily toward her. He even went so far as to say, “A woman who speaks against my father is not needed in this house. Leave this house at once!” This left her utterly shocked and speechless.
Her parents witnessed everything that had unfolded. At the same time, when her husband told her to leave the house, she was deeply shaken. She bowed before the deity and then walked toward the back entrance. Reaching there, she stepped down and stood at the spot where the kolam was usually drawn. At that moment, the house suddenly turned dark, while the spot where she stood began to glow brightly.
Divine darshan of Goddess Mahalakshmi
At the same time, the Mahalakshmi, who always resided in her home, firmly held her hand and stood beside her. She smiled radiantly and said, “In a house where there is no place for you, how can I stay? Come, let us leave.” Saying this, the goddess gently invited her, and the woman slowly took two steps forward.
At that moment, as the two of them moved from place to place, darkness spread everywhere they stood. Everyone who witnessed this was stunned. Her husband, shocked by what was happening, asked his wife to stop and told her to come back inside. She hesitated, and at that moment, the goddess revealed her divine presence and spoke about her. She said, “This woman gave me nothing extravagant—just a handful of cow dung, a lamp placed in a pot, and called me lovingly. It was her devotion that bound me to this house. Yet, you hurt her without understanding her greatness. From now on, she will light the lamp freely in this house.” Hearing this, her father-in-law agreed. The goddess then took her hand and led her back inside. From that moment onward, Mahalakshmi permanently resided in their home, and the house flourished with prosperity and happiness.
At that moment, a woman who was present there said, “Will anyone get angry over lighting a lamp? Is it even possible for such a father-in-law to exist? I find it hard to believe.” Paati then began to respond to her.
Specifically, Paati explained, “In some families, no matter how many opportunities for prosperity they have, some people, due to their narrow-minded thinking, avoid even spending on essential things for themselves. They live with a miserly mindset, clinging to poverty.” To illustrate this point, she narrated a story.
The Karmas of This Story
Due to the presence of Mars karma in her life, there was a delay in her marriage. However, when it came to lighting lamps, the positive vibrations of Mars karma began to manifest. As these vibrations spread, the household experienced an increase in prosperity, wealth, property, and overall well-being.
At the same time, the household also experienced the positive vibrations of Guru (Jupiter) karma. When such vibrations are present, divine grace flourishes within the family, and the blessings of the deity remain abundant.
Since the goddess resided in the house as a divine presence, harmony between the husband and wife improved significantly. When such harmony prevails, it signifies the positive vibrations of Venus (Shukra) karma within the household.
At the same time, the household experienced the positive vibrations of Rahu karma. This was because the family’s ancestors had been waiting patiently for the moment when their poverty would end and prosperity would begin. It was during this time that she entered the family as a daughter-in-law. Through her actions, the family rose to greatness. As a result, the ancestors of the family blessed her, and with their blessings, the positive vibrations of Rahu karma prevailed in the household.
At the same time, the household also experienced the positive vibrations of Moon (Chandra) karma. When divine grace resides in a family, peace prevails in the home. There will be a sense of mutual understanding and a willingness to compromise, and the members of the family will live with love and harmony.
Regardless of the time or circumstances, her husband and father-in-law worked hard, which led to an improvement in their lives. Thus, the positive vibrations of Saturn (Shani) karma were also present in the household.
Thus, when a lamp is lit in a household, it brings together the positive vibrations of all these karmas, resulting in prosperity and well-being for the family. Everyone thanked Paati and took their leave, while Paati also offered her respects to them. Om Shri Ganeshaarpanam.
