Pavan and Akalya’s marriage was completed. According to their family tradition, the couple had to visit their clan deity’s temple to offer a harmonious Pongal, dedicate it to the deity, and share the prasadam joyfully with everyone before sending the bride to her in-laws’ home. While offering Pongal, Pavan and Akalya strolled around the temple, paying their respects to each sanctum. During their rounds, they noticed a sage seated on a platform. The sage beckoned to them. A frightened Akalya hesitated, but Pavan took her along. Together, they received blessings from the sage.

The Sage’s Blessings to Pavan

Hearing about the couple meeting the sage, both families gathered at the temple. The sage asked Pavan, “Who is your favorite deity?” Pavan replied, “The Saptha Kanyas (Seven Virgins).” His mother, surprised, thought, My son always worships Angala Parameswari with devotion. Why is he saying this? The sage blessed Pavan, saying, “The Saptha Kanyas will be born as your daughters. You will live a blessed life. Never let go of your wife under any circumstances and always keep her happy.”

At that moment, relatives told Pavan, “Reject this blessing! Even raising five daughters makes a king a beggar. How will you manage seven daughters and live in peace? Refuse this boon.” But Pavan firmly said, “This is a blessing from the Almighty,” and accepted it wholeheartedly.

Akalya’s Life in Her New Home

Akalya lived like a queen in her in-laws’ home. Her mother-in-law and father-in-law treated her as their own daughter. Reflecting on the life she was blessed with, Akalya expressed her gratitude to the deity.

Every year, she gave birth to a daughter, and within seven years, she had seven daughters. Akalya went to her maternal home only for the birth of her first child, but for all subsequent births, she remained in her in-laws’ house. Her mother-in-law cared for her like a mother. Ten years passed since their marriage. During this time, her mother-in-law developed a desire for a grandson. She began discussing her wish with Pavan. However, Pavan replied that raising seven daughters was already a huge responsibility and that he didn’t want any more children. In response, his mother said, “What if the next child is also a girl? Then I will arrange a second marriage for you. I will take care of both wives and their children.” Angered by this, Pavan scolded his mother, saying, “Your words will hurt Akalya deeply. Let’s end this matter here and now.”

Encountering the Sage Again at the Temple

One day, the family visited a Shiva temple. After completing the rituals and circumambulating the sanctums, Pavan and Akalya strolled leisurely while their children stayed with their grandparents. To their astonishment, they saw the same sage again in the temple. They hurried to seek his blessings. The sage recognized them, smiled, and inquired about the children. Pavan brought the children to the sage, who blessed them. The seven daughters, radiant with Lakshmi’s grace, stood before him. The sage advised, “Raise these children well, and you will lead a joyous life. Never abandon your wife; ensure her happiness.” Sensing sorrow in Pavan’s voice, the sage asked about the reason. Pavan confided his mother’s desire for a grandson.

Following the children, Pavan’s parents arrived at the spot. Pavan’s mother saw the sage and immediately panicked, fearing he might give another blessing that would lead to more daughters. The sage smiled and asked her, “Have you developed a desire for a grandson?” She replied, “Yes, as a woman, it’s natural to have such a wish. My husband and I want a grandson to continue our lineage.” The sage then asked, “What if it’s not written in your karma?” To this, she boldly replied, “If you will it, it will happen.”

The Mother-in-Law’s Utterance

The sage instructed her, “Close your eyes and believe, May what is written in my karma happen. Then open your eyes and express your heartfelt wish.” She obeyed, saying, “I want a grandson. As soon as he’s born, I will cradle him to my bosom, kiss his forehead, and pass him on. But I will not celebrate his birth as my own.” Hearing this, Pavan and Akalya thought, Why is she speaking so strangely? The sage asked, “Are you speaking with full awareness?” She affirmed. He then declared, “Your son will have a male child. Until then, meditate daily on your words and maintain equanimity. Let go of selfishness.”

Akalya’s Child

Akalya became pregnant again. As her due date approached, Pavan and his mother took her to the hospital. After sending her to the delivery room, they waited anxiously outside. At that time, Pavan told his mother that he would step out for a while and return. Meanwhile, a wealthy woman arrived with her daughter, who was also due for delivery. She sent her daughter into the delivery room with the help of a nurse and sat beside Pavan’s mother. They introduced themselves to each other.

Both Women Giving Birth at the Same Time

Both Akalya and the wealthy woman’s daughter gave birth at the same time. After a short while, a nurse came out carrying a baby boy and handed him over to the wealthy woman. Overjoyed, the woman exclaimed, “Ah, I have a grandson!” She then offered her gratitude to God. At the same time, Pavan’s mother asked eagerly, “Where is my grandson?” Surprised, the wealthy woman asked, “Grandson?!” Then she added, “Wait a moment, I will be right back,” and went inside. Meanwhile, the wealthy woman returned with her grandson, gave him to Pavan’s mother, and said, “Hold him for now. Cradle him until your grandson arrives, and offer him your blessings.” Pavan’s mother took the baby, held him close, kissed his forehead, and handed him back, saying, “Here, take your child.”

At that moment, a nurse came out with another baby and handed the child to Pavan’s mother. Ecstatic, she received the baby and looked at it closely to confirm: “Boy or girl?” To her shock, she realized that the child in her arms was a girl. She cried out loudly, shaking the hospital with her screams. “This is not the heir of our family! There has been some foul play! I will not accept this!” she shouted repeatedly. Hearing the commotion, a doctor arrived and reprimanded her, saying, “This is a hospital, not a place for making noise.” Just then, Pavan returned and looked at the baby in his mother’s arms. “Mother, has my grandson been born? Did you cradle him and bless him?” he asked. His mother angrily replied, “Some deceit has occurred here! The sage said a grandson would be born, but they have handed me a granddaughter. This is not our family’s child!” Pavan took the child from her and approached the doctor. He said, “A sage told us that a boy would be born. But you have given my mother a girl. This cannot be our child.” The doctor replied firmly, “You are educated, aren’t you? How can you believe that everything a sage says will happen? Your wife has given birth to a baby girl. That is the truth.” She dismissed him and went back inside. At that moment, a nurse took the baby from Pavan and went inside as well. A short while later, the nurse said, “You may now see Akalya.” Pavan called his mother, but she replied, “I cannot come. I feel as though something is wrong. Leave me here,” and sat down, lost in thought.

Akalya’s Determination

When Pavan entered the room, he asked Akalya, “Did you ask the doctor whether we had a boy or a girl?” Akalya calmly replied, “No, I didn’t. I was confident it would be a boy. But when the baby was born, the doctor asked the nurse to tie the tag with my name to a baby girl. That’s when I realized it was a girl.”. Pavan, confused, asked, “Why didn’t the sage’s words come true?” Akalya reassured him, “Your mother had declared that if a grandson were born, she would cradle him and hand him over without claiming him as her own. To ensure that wouldn’t happen, the sage must have intentionally altered the prophecy. I believe this girl was born as part of that divine intervention. From this day, we should raise our seven daughters as the Saptha Kanyas and this eighth daughter as Ashta Lakshmi. I have accepted it with all my heart. After returning home, Pavan and Akalya found peace and began living happily. However, Pavan’s mother couldn’t accept the disappointment. She stopped eating and sleeping properly and spent her days in sorrow. Every morning and evening, she visited the Shiva temple to see if the sage was there. Meanwhile, a neighbor visited her and, seeing her distress, said, “I can suggest a way to ease your worries. In a nearby village, there’s a wise seer in a temple mandapam who narrates the stories of karma. He can explain why this happened to your family. Go and meet him.” Without delay, Pavan’s mother set out the next day.

The Truth Revealed by the Seer

Pavan’s mother reached the temple and sat down, waiting for the seer. She asked the people gathered there, “Will the seer provide answers to our questions? Will I find peace of mind here?” The others assured her, “You will certainly get answers to your doubts and find clarity here.” With hope in her heart, she waited patiently. The seer soon arrived and took his seat. He looked at Pavan’s mother and smiled. “Do you wish to understand why this happened in your family?” he asked. She stood up and nodded affirmatively. “I will tell you the reason behind these events in your family. You don’t need to say anything,” the seer began.

“In your previous life, you had a daughter who is now your daughter-in-law, Akalya. The son you have in this life, Pavan, was your son-in-law in the past. You led a prosperous life, and your house was filled with cattle. You employed a family to take care of the livestock. Your daughter lived a life of comfort and luxury. However, she had a habit of wagering on everything she did. You repeatedly advised her against this, saying it was wrong, but she didn’t listen. When it was time for her to marry, you arranged her wedding.

When she became pregnant, you brought her to your home for delivery. At that time, she told her husband, ‘I will give birth to a boy. Let’s bet on it!’ Shocked, you scolded her, saying it was wrong to wager on childbirth. Still, she persisted and told her husband, ‘If I give birth to a boy, I will return to our home with the child. If it’s a girl, I will stay here in my maternal home forever.’ Her husband, on the other hand, said, ‘I don’t care if it’s a boy or a girl. Even if I have seven daughters, I will consider them the Saptha Kanyas and raise them happily.’

The day your daughter gave birth, the woman employed to take care of the cattle also went into labor. It so happened that her husband and your husband were both at a temple festival, leaving only you, your daughter, and the woman at home. Your daughter delivered first—a baby girl. Upset, you concealed this from her as she was unconscious. Meanwhile, the cattle caretaker gave birth to a boy. Driven by selfishness, you switched the babies. You handed the baby boy to your daughter and sent her happily to her in-laws, keeping the baby girl with the caretaker woman.

No one knew of your actions, and you lived in peace until one day, you saw your granddaughter, born of your daughter, living in poverty behind your house. Guilt consumed you, and although you cherished your grandson, you could not enjoy the happiness of truly claiming him as your own. Tormented by your guilt, you passed away, praying to correct your mistake in the next life. In this life, your granddaughter has returned as your eighth child, while the caretaker woman’s child has been born as Akalya’s husband, Pavan. The sage ensured the karma played out perfectly. When you declared you would cradle a grandson and hand him over without attachment, the karma ensured that the boy would not be born to you. Nature itself intervened to correct the wrongs you committed.”

In this story, Pavan’s mother’s karma from her past life played a significant role. The benevolent vibrations of Guru karma ensured the birth of seven daughters, fostering an auspicious environment. However, her desire for a grandson and even the thought of arranging a second marriage for her son to have a male child showed that Rahu karma’s negative vibrations were still affecting her.

Both in her previous life and in this one, Chandran karma consistently exerted positive vibrations. This is why, in her past life, she provided the same care and nourishment to the caretaker woman as she did to her own daughter, doing so with a good heart.

Similarly, in this life, she treated her daughter-in-law with the same love and affection as if she were her own daughter. This positive influence of Chandran karma also allowed her to clear her karmic debts quickly and achieve redemption, as the sage explained to those present.

The people gathered around understood the deeper meaning of karma. They said, “We now realize that whatever mistakes we commit, knowingly or unknowingly, this universe ensures that they are accounted for and resolved. Good actions lead to good results, and bad actions bring suffering. This is the immutable law of karma.”

May prosperity prevail.
