It is only by His grace alone that one can think of Shiva wholeheartedly, bow to Him, and move one’s feet toward Him. This is a narration about how Lord Shiva bestowed His grace upon Karna.
The Life of Karna
Karna was born into a poor family that struggled even for food. He was a person shaped by the kind words and compassionate nature of his mother. Consequently, Karna always carried compassion in his speech and behavior. He was also brought up with a strong sense of morality. Unable to afford proper food, Karna joined work at a modern rice mill, separating sacks of paddy. He began working with utmost sincerity and honesty for his employer, eventually earning a special place in his employer’s heart. Over time, the employer’s wife also grew fond of Karna. Gradually, the employer shared with Karna details about his habits, his possessions, the charitable activities he had undertaken, and the philanthropic plans he wanted to pursue in the future. The employer was deeply devoted to Lord Annamalaiyar and made it a practice to send as much ghee as he could afford every year for the lighting of the grand lamp during the Karthigai Deepam festival. He would also arrive in Tiruvannamalai a week before the festival to personally engage in various services, including distributing food and clothes, and donating cows and calves to impoverished families to help them rebuild their lives. After Karna joined, the employer and his wife brought Karna along with them to Tiruvannamalai for that year’s Karthigai Deepam festival. Until then, Karna had only heard of the grand festival but knew nothing more about it. That year, by the grace of the Almighty, Karna experienced everything, receiving divine blessings and opportunities beyond his imagination.
The First Karthigai Deepam Festival Karna Witnessed
From the time of his birth until the age of 24, Karna knew about the Tiruvannamalai Deepam festival only through hearsay, but it was only that year he saw it with his own eyes for the first time. After the Deepam festival, during the ritual of burning the “Chokkappanai,” Karna learned the significance of the ritual by listening to his employer. Following this, they prepared a list of people to whom cows and calves were to be donated the following year and completed all the charitable activities before returning home. That very year, the employer concluded that Lord Annamalaiyar had shown him Karna in response to his prayer to find someone capable of continuing the charitable acts throughout his life. With the consent of Karna’s mother, the adoption ceremony took place. After some time, both the employer and his wife passed away in succession. Karna performed all their final rites properly and subsequently completed the rituals for his mother as well. Thereafter, every year, Karna ensured that the annual rites for all three were performed correctly and without fail.
Karna, who was characterized by humility, love, and compassion, had a wife, Andal, who was quite the opposite. Their daughter also possessed the same traits as her mother, which caused Karna great distress. He prayed to Lord Arunachaleshwarar, asking that his daughter be blessed with qualities similar to his own and that her life be transformed for the better. Time passed, and after completing her college education, Amirtha went on to pursue higher studies. During this time, she met a man named Chandramouli. They studied together, and gradually, Amirtha developed an affection for him. She believed Chandramouli to be a wealthy aristocrat because of his attire and charming appearance, which he maintained meticulously. Unaware of the truth, she fell in love with him, despite his repeated statements that he was poor. Days passed, and Chandramouli, too, developed feelings for her. His affection grew into love, and he reached a point where he felt he could not live without her. However, when Amirtha’s mother pointed out that Chandramouli was a poor man, with living conditions even worse than their driver’s household, Amirtha began to distance herself from him. Her ingrained belief that wealth was of utmost importance led to the failure of their love. Chandramouli, unable to forget her, began to live in constant longing and sorrow.
Chandramouli, Who Transformed Himself
Gradually, Chandramouli began to move on from the memories of Amirtha. His uncle advised him wisely and changed his way of thinking. Following this, Chandramouli stopped seeing Amirtha as a lover and started viewing her as a friend. On many occasions, he helped her, but he no longer harbored any feelings of love for her. In this way, Chandramouli transformed himself.
Amirtha’s Transformation
During a conversation with her father about the wedding of an employee’s family member at their mill, Amirtha, who had always prioritized money, was told by her father that love holds greater value than wealth. These words began to resonate with her, as he explained that only in places devoid of love does money take precedence. Slowly, Amirtha started reflecting on her actions and began thinking about her former lover, Chandramouli. Realizing that her behavior had been wrong, she informed her father that she would accompany him to the Karthigai Deepam festival this time, bringing him immense joy. Her father took her to the festival, where he explained the significance of the Deepam and the ritual of burning the “Chokkappanai.” Meanwhile, Amirtha wrote down all her undesirable traits on a piece of paper and prayed to Lord Arunachaleshwarar, asking Him to remove them and transform her. She then placed the paper into the Chokkappanai fire, letting it burn to ashes. With a renewed spirit, she journeyed back home as a changed person alongside her father.
Upon returning home, Amirtha shared the changes she had undergone and the details of how she had pushed Chandramouli away, whom she had once loved deeply. Karna, after meeting Chandramouli, agreed to their marriage. However, he realized that he could not proceed with the matter by going against his wife. Trusting that Lord Arunachaleshwarar would extend His grace to his wife as well and transform her, he left the matter to divine will. True to his belief, within a year, various circumstances led his wife to change her mindset. The following year, with great joy, she accompanied her husband and daughter to the Karthigai Deepam festival. During the ritual of burning the “Chokkappanai,” she mentally surrendered all her impurities, arrogance, and pride about wealth into the flames, letting them be consumed. Returning home as a renewed person alongside her husband and daughter, she wholeheartedly supported their daughter’s marriage to Chandramouli. Thus, the couple happily united in marriage.
The Karmas of This Story
In this story, the primary positive influence, or good karma, was brought about solely by Chandran Karma. In a family, if children are born under the stars Bharani, Magham, Kettai, or Uttirattadhi as their zodiac stars, or if these stars align with the ascendant point or the ruling planet of the ascendant, it signifies that they are born with Chandran Karma recorded in their karmic account. Additionally, if children are born under the Virgo or Libra ascendants, it also indicates the presence of Chandran Karma. In families with the positive vibrations of Chandran Karma, there will be no scarcity of love, compassion, and affection. In this story as well, Karna, his employer—the owner of the mill—and his wife were predominantly influenced by Chandran Karma. Moreover, Karna’s mother also benefited from the positive vibrations of Chandran Karma, which is why she entrusted her son to be adopted by someone else, ensuring happiness for both her son and the adopting family.
The mother agreed to perform the final rites and annual ceremonies for the deceased each year. Karna’s wife acted as she did due to the negative influences of Rahu Karma, Mars Karma, Guru Karma, and Venus Karma affecting her. Similarly, Amirtha carried all the negative vibrations of her mother’s karmic influences, which is why she moved about with arrogance, pride, and a self-centered attitude. However, by the grace of Lord Arunachaleshwarar, her mind transformed, and the sinful karmas within her dissipated. She began to absorb the positive vibrations of Chandran Karma, predominant in her father, which marked the beginning of positive changes in her life. Karna’s wife, too, experienced a similar transformation, and their lives flourished due to the blessings of Lord Arunachaleshwarar. It is true that in a family where Chandran Karma is predominant, no matter the challenges or the negative karmic vibrations that arise, Chandran Karma will destroy them all and bring prosperity to their lives.
